Nervous anorexia. A case study

Author: Dr. Pintea Ancuta

Abstract:

Nervous anorexia is a mental disorder with a high risk of death for both adolescents and young adults. Having a growing incidence in general population, such a disorder is considered to be the third chronical disorder of female adolescents and young adults from an epidemiological perspective.

Thus, the correct diagnosis and prompt intervention are very important. The differential diagnosis should be done against other eating disorders such as bulimia wich is similar to nervous anorexia. The correct management of nervous anorexia can lead to early treatment and decreased risk of death.

Our paper is aimed at presenting the case study of a female student, age 19, who developed nervous anorexia based upon an affective trauma, and also depressive disorder with suicide attempts. The evolution of the case involved partial remission and relapse shortly after. The prognosis for this case is positive based upon several factors such as personality type, age, family support, increased self-esteem and a family history with no previous cases of mental disorders.
